wintercity

well, apparently it takes the europeans to shake us out of our winter doldrums. today i went to nathan phillips square to take in some of wintercity 2008--specifically the production of "alice" presented by the netherlands' theatre gajes. the photos should speak for themselves [sorry--some are of questionable quality as i didn't want to use my flash] although they can not really convey anything about the inspired music coming from the musicians in the plastic bubble. it was such a fun experience and we positioned ourselves perfectly to be right in the middle of things, nearly getting trampled by every performer at one point or another. the "rabbit" took to my shoulder for solace and the sparkling confetti covered me, filling the hood of my jacket and working its way down into my shirt....
as the sun disappeared, the fire appeared. the french fire art troupe, cie carabosse, took over to warm everyone with their amazing displays. it was pretty mesmerizing. i spoke with one of the artists, who told me that they have come from a town close to bordeaux. they brought all of their equipment over by ship and i told her, in my rusty french, that it was truly a gift that they brought over to us cold canadians.

and thanks to joan for dragging me out of my apartment today when all i wanted to do was hide.
